Mr. Spooner has partnered with Project Healthy Schools, through the University of Michigan, to assist with providing our Huskies with some fantastic and fun health education activities. On Tuesday, October 17, Chef Louis, a critically acclaimed chef who has cooked all over the country, visited our 6th grade health class. He was here to help students focus on fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods by teaching ways to prepare them that will make them tastier for kids while they learn some cooking skills. Since October is farm to school month in Michigan what better way than to start with some amazing apple recipes! The middle school smelled delicious and the students very much enjoyed the learning opportunity. Holly Academy would like to welcome our new Occupational Therapist, Mrs. Audra Shoemaker. Mrs. Shoemaker has been an Occupational Therapist for 28 years. In the past, she worked at Hurley Children's Rehabilitation Center and ATI Physical Therapy. Mrs. Shoemaker loves to read and go on hikes with her bulldog, Finster. First grade had the opportunity to visit Upland Hills farm for a fantastic field trip! It was a wonderful day. They got to learn about farm animals in a barn show, take a hayride, walk a trail, explore the barns full of adorable animals and pick a pumpkin. Our middle school Huskies are setting goals and surpassing them! Mrs. Leathers had an IXL challenge for the most math skills mastered and proficient for the past two weeks. IXL is a program we are utilizing to help target the specific skills that each student needs to strengthen. The top ten students earned a pizza party. We are extremely proud of the students! This is an amazing accomplishment for a two week challenge. Horticulture students enjoy their fall harvest from our campus vegetable garden by making homemade salsa. They also cooked up some squash and ate grapes and watermelon. Holly Academy is pleased to present one of our new faculty members, Mrs. Katrina Leathers. Mrs. Leathers has been a Husky at heart for many years and we are thrilled she has returned to our school. "My name is Katrina Leathers and I am so excited to return to Holly Academy. My first venture at Holly Academy began in 1999 when it opened. First, I was a parent and volunteer and eventually the first Parent Liaison. This year I will be teaching Kindergarten through third grade Spanish and IXL in middle school. Both my children, Jessica and Ryan are graduates from Holly Academy. I am married and have two dogs and a cat who thinks that he is a cat. My passion is learning and I am an avid reader. Mrs. Price and her 8th hour Horticulture class would like to thank Carlson's Greenhouse for their generous donation as we continue to grow our horticulture program. They have been so kind as to donate several mother plants to use for propagation and several bags of potting mix. They have an event this weekend at their greenhouse called Houseplant Palooza.
